Rose Atoll Marine National Monument, proclaimed in 2009, surrounds the southernmost point of United States territory - a small pink atoll about 130 miles east of the main Samoan islands, coloured by the coralline algae that build its reef. The monument covers roughly 13,400 square miles of water around the atoll and protects nesting green turtles, giant clams and one of the last intact seabird colonies in the region. Access is restricted to research and management.
