Created in September 2016, the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument covers about 4,913 square miles of the Atlantic on the seaward edge of Georges Bank, roughly 130 miles southeast of Cape Cod. It protects three undersea canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon and four extinct volcanic seamounts, along with deep-sea coral, whales and sea turtles. It is the only marine national monument in the Atlantic and is not open to visitation.
