The Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness covers 181,535 acres of the Elk Mountains in central Colorado, in the White River and Gunnison national forests. It holds six fourteeners, including Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak - the two maroon-coloured summits above Maroon Lake that are the most photographed mountains in Colorado. The wilderness was designated in 1964 and enlarged in 1980. Day access to Maroon Lake in season is by reservation or shuttle only.
