Congress established the 110,000-acre Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument in August 1982, two years after the eruption that removed the top 1,300 feet of the mountain and flattened 230 square miles of forest. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service within Gifford Pinchot National Forest, the monument was set aside to let the blast zone recover on its own and to let people watch it happen. Johnston Ridge and Windy Ridge give the classic crater views.
