The Sipsey Wilderness lies in Bankhead National Forest around the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River in northwestern Alabama. Designated in 1975 and expanded in 1988, its 24,922 acres make it the largest wilderness in the state and the biggest tract of old-growth hardwood east of the Mississippi. Sandstone canyons, hemlock and so many waterfalls that it is known as the Land of a Thousand Waterfalls.
