Abraham Lincoln and his family spent a quarter of his presidency at this hilltop cottage on the grounds of the Soldiers' Home, riding out to it from the White House through the summers of 1862, 1863 and 1864 to escape the heat and the crowds. He was living here while he developed the Emancipation Proclamation. Designated a national monument in 2000, the cottage is on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home and is open for guided tours.
