Created in 2000 largely out of the security buffer around the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, the 194,451-acre Hanford Reach National Monument protects the last free-flowing, non-tidal stretch of the Columbia River along with the largest remnant of the shrub-steppe that once covered the Columbia Basin. Six decades of exclusion left it undeveloped; it is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
